Abstract

This concern to embrace both pastoral ministry and academic studies has been very present in Jesuit formation. Jesuits make common use of the term “apostolate” for such ministerial experience. In this article, I explore how Jesu-its today stress the importance of apostolates in the formation of their young men in general and in the period when they study theology in particular. My reflections revolve around the following distinctions: first, there is a relationship between apostolates undertaken during formation and what we call “the apostolic nature of the Jesuit charism;” secondly, there does seem to be a post-Vatican II shifting of emphasis in Jesuit formation structures concerning the value of apostolates during the study of theology.
