Alternatives to bread and wine in Eucharist in Africa
Keywords:
Eucharistic food, African food, InculturationAbstract
In the present reflection, we Intend to highlight the ground on which many African theologians today argue for a substitution of bread and wine in the Eucharist for African food and drink. "We are still celebrating the Eucharist with bread and wine," exclaims B. Bujo, "although many of our simple folk have never in their life seen wine, and cannot identify themselves with this outlandish drink, the fruit of the earth overseas! Our black people," he goes on, "are still ignored and Christ is made responsible for this disdain, as if God would not share with us our 'ugali' and 'fufu', and our banana or maize beer or palm wine".
