Abstract

This book is a gigantic, arduous and diligently presented work. I recommend the book to anyone teaching the Old Testament. The book carefully discusses, examines, and presents polemics against idols (Heathen-gods, Divinities, Deities) in the Old Testament.  The author, Sonja Ammann, correctly and accurately situates the argument of the polemics within the context of Wisdom Literature or Tradition and explains the use of the word idol as “powerless objects of reprehensible worship” (298). For instance, the work of the prophet Isaiah argues that idols have a human origin.
