The Author attempts to investigate the meaning of 1 Sam 3:3a ("and the lamp of God had not yet gone out"). He is asking whether it refers to the physical lamp or is it a metaphorical expression. The study concludes that the "lamp of God" is a metaphor referring to the presence of God which is threatened by the misbehaviour of Eli's son's. but the signs that God is still among his people will be the rise of a new symbol: the prophet.
