From Bent-Over to Straightened Up (Lk 13:10-21): A New Posture for Africa

In this paper, I engage in an exegetical analysis of Luke 13:10-21 and re-propose a theology that positively addresses
existential issues of suffering and bondage. The paper points to a ray of hope that where the Church lives up to its calling as a divine
agent of salvation, witnessing to the kingdom of God, that which is bent over would straighten up. It seeks to draw lessons from the narrative of the bent-over woman and proffer it as a paradigm for Africa’s transformation. I argue that the Church’s response to the continent’s multifaceted crisis should challenge the status quo and effect systemic change that transforms communities. The Church’s impact is evident in its ability to respond to people’s felt needs with the Gospel, dare to touch lives and pull down oppressive structures.
