Gustavo Gutiérrez, the renowned Peruvian liberation theologian and Dominican Catholic priest, passed away on October 22, 2024, at the age of 96. Celebrated as one of the founding figures of Latin American Liberation Theology, Gutiérrez left an indelible mark on theology and social justice through his transformative work, writings, and lifelong dedication to advocating for the poor and marginalised. His seminal text, A Theology of Liberation, published in 1971, is recognised as a cornerstone of Liberation Theology, promoting the idea that theology should serve as a means of liberation for oppressed populations by intertwining faith with social justice.
