FIDUCIA SUPPLICANS: TOPOS AND KAIROS OF SYNODAL COMMITMENT IN AFRICA
Keywords:
Synodality, BlessingAbstract
This article explores the relation and impact of the December 18, 2023, doctrinal declaration Fiducia Supplicans (FS) over the synodal process in the Catholic Church, particularly through the lens of its African reception. The document’s release amid the ongoing synod ignited diverse reactions, highlighting tensions between Roman prudential teachings and local contexts. The article examines the declaration’s redaction context and content, its authority, its reception in Africa, and its implications on synodality. By analysing the response of the African Church, the article argues that FS has catalysed a meaningful exercise of synodal dialogue, offering a Topos (a significant space for theological reflection) and a Kairos (an opportune moment) to envision how Church’s unity can be authentically shaped through respectful dialogue and attentive listening.
